Choose a plan: Shared vCPU or Dedicated vCPU

Updated October 27, 20263 min read

What the Shared vCPU and Dedicated vCPU plans are, how they differ, and which one fits your workload.

Every Nextify virtual machine runs on AMD EPYC processors with NVMe SSD storage and its own public IPv4 address. You choose a plan (a machine type) from one of four lines:

LineWhat you getGood for
Shared vCPUAMD vCPUs shared with other virtual machines on the hostMost workloads: websites, APIs, apps, development, small databases
Dedicated vCPUAMD vCPUs pinned to host CPU threads that only your machine usesSteady, CPU-heavy work: builds and CI, video and batch processing, busy databases

SecureAMD SEV-SNP encrypted memory on dedicated vCPUs, with remote attestationWorkloads that must be protected from the host (see Secure VMs)

Shared vCPU

A Shared vCPU plan gets its vCPUs from a pool that several virtual machines use. Most applications are idle much of the time, so sharing keeps the price low while your machine still bursts to its full vCPU count when it needs to. When neighbours are busy at the same moment, a CPU-bound task can run a little slower.

Choose Shared vCPU when your load comes in bursts or stays moderate: web servers, APIs, small and medium databases, development and test machines, background workers.

Dedicated vCPU

A Dedicated vCPU plan gets host CPU threads of its own. Nextify pins your machine's vCPUs to them when it starts, and no other machine is ever scheduled there; its memory is reserved for it as well. The CPU you pay for is always there, so performance stays the same all day.

Choose Dedicated vCPU when your machine keeps its CPUs busy for long stretches, or when you need consistent latency: build servers and CI runners, video encoding, batch and data processing, game servers, busy production databases.

Sizes

Shared vCPU plans go from 1 vCPU / 512 MB up to 8 vCPU / 32 GB; Dedicated vCPU plans come in 2, 4 and 8 vCPU with 4 GB of memory per vCPU. Each plan includes its NVMe SSD boot disk and a monthly transfer allowance, pooled across your account. The pricing page lists every plan with its monthly and hourly price.

You need more disk than a plan includes? Attach a volume instead of choosing a bigger plan.

Billing

You pay for the hours a machine runs, at the plan's hourly price, and never more than the monthly price in a month. See Billing and pricing.

Changing your mind

To move to another plan, take a snapshot of the machine and create a new one from it with the plan you want; the new plan's disk must be at least as large as the snapshot's.
